BY DENNIS DOMRZALSKI The Republican nominee for the Bernalillo County District Attorney's race, attorney Simon Kubiak, says he'll drop out of the race because of a lack of campaign funds. Kubiak made the announcement in a news release distributed by his campaign manager, Rick Abraham. The release was also posted on Kubiak's campaign web site. “The median income in Albuquerque is around $47,500 per year … it would be irresponsible of me to ask our supporters to donate their hard earned money to my campaign knowing that it can become a million dollar race or more,” Kubiak said in the release. “New Mexicans cannot afford to challenge anyone who has unlimited resources and support from a multimillionaire from another country.” Kubiak raised $2,050 for the Republican primary in which he was unopposed. His Democrat opponent for the November election, Raul Torrez, raised $353,639 for his primary race with Ed Perea. Some of that money came from international financier Seorge Soros. Kubiak's release said the Republican Party of New Mexico might meet to name someone to replace him on the November ballot. Party Chairman Frank Ruvolo wasn't immediately available for comment. Exactly what the process is for replacing a candidate who withdraws from a race wasn't immediately clear. ABQ Free Press was waiting to hear back from the Clerk's Office about the process.
