Clinton, Trump Win N.M.

Bernie says he will stay in the race until the convention in July

BY ABQ FREE PRESS STAFF AND WIRE Hillary Clinton won the New Mexico Democratic Presidential primary, beating Bernie Sanders by 6,513 votes in a contest in which 214,475 votes were cast, according to unofficial results. The call by The Associated Press for the presumptive Democratic nominee came at 8:54 p.m., just under two hours after polls closed. This came after Clinton’s East Coast victory speech in New York where Clinton continued her pivot to the general election and on presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. The Albuquerque Journal reported that Sanders outperformed Clinton in Bernalillo County, overcoming a deficit in absentee and early voting via an edge in Election Day ballots. Sanders received 38,247 votes to Clinton’s 36,937 votes, according to unofficial results, the newspaper reported. Clinton won in New Jersey as well as New Mexico, while Bernie Sanders won in North Dakota Tuesday night. The Associated Press reported early Wednesday that Clinton had won California, but Sanders gave no indication that he would yield, insisting earlier that he would continue his campaign and barely acknowledging her achievement, according to The New York Times. Sanders said that he would stay in the race until the convention in July. Much of Clinton’s victory speech focused on Trump, who also won New Mexico Tuesday night, and how she differed with him. She gave a harsh criticism of his recent controversies, highlighting what may prove to be the Democratic campaign strategy. Trump took 73,698 of the New Mexico vote, while his five defeated rivals split the other 30,513 votes cast in the GOP primary.
