How You Can Choose What Politicians Are Paid

BY DENNIS DOMRZALSKI Want to have a direct say in how much money Albuquerque's mayor and city councilors make? Here's your chance. There will be two openings this year on the five-member Citizens' Independent Salary Commission, the body that sets the salaries for the mayor and councilors. And the work isn't that hard. The committee meets every other year to review the mayor's and councilors' salaries, and it can increase or decrease those salaries. In 2015, the commission recommended that the mayor's salary be increased to $125,000 a year from $103,845. However, Mayor Richard J. Berry refused to accept the higher salary. The commission also voted to raise the salaries of city councilors to $30,000 a year, up from $17,500. The qualifications to be a commissioner aren't that strict. You have to be a resident of the City of Albuquerque and you can't be an officer, official or employee of the city, or an immediate family member of the same.   To apply, submit a letter of interest and résumé to:
