Superintendent of Insurance Reappointed

Unanimous Vote Grants John Franchini a Third Term

BY JUANI HOPWOOD The Insurance Nominating Committee unanimously voted to reappoint Superintendent of Insurance John G. Franchini on Monday. After open meetings, comprehensive vetting and input from the public and industry experts, Superintendent Franchini was selected for his third four-year appointment, ending December 31, 2019. Superintendent Franchini’s first appointment was in 2010, and once the independent Office of Superintendent of Insurance was created in 2013, he was selected as its head through 2015. “I appreciate the continued confidence and responsibility placed in me by the Insurance Nominating Committee. Safeguarding the interests of New Mexico policyholders will continue to be at the forefront as we improve efficiency throughout our department,” Superintendent Franchini said. Superintendent Franchini’s unanimous reappointment is an expression of approval for the progress he has overseen during his previous terms. He said that one of his next initiatives will be “to streamline our regulatory process so it will be less cumbersome for insurers to offer quality, affordable coverage to our citizens.” “The Superintendent’s deep respect for the industry and consumers of New Mexico is apparent through the dedication he has shown over the last several years. The progress that the Office of Superintendent of Insurance has made is to be commended,” Nominating Chairman Roger Buelow said. “I look forward to watching the growth of the Office of Superintendent of Insurance over the next four years.” The Nominating Committee has nine members, four of which are appointed by the governor, four by the Legislature and one chairperson who is chosen by the other eight committee members.
