NM Supreme Court Names Judge in Phil Griego Case

BY DENNIS DOMRZALSKI The New Mexico Supreme Court has appointed a Bernalillo County District Court judge to preside over the criminal fraud trial of former state Sen. Phil Griego. Judge Brett Lovelace, of the Second Judicial District, was appointed to Griego's case by Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Daniels on Monday, the Supreme Court said. The appointment came after all nine judges in the First Judicial District in Santa Fe recused themselves from the case. Griego has been charged with nine courts of corruption surrounding the sale of a state-owned building in 2014. State Attorney General Hector Balderas' office filed the charges against Griego in February. Griego, a Democrat from San Jose, resigned from the Senate a week before the end of the 2015 legislative session in the midst of an ethics probe into the real estate deal in which Griego made a $50,000 commission. Griego has pleaded not guilty to the charges.  (Photo credit: AP)
