Intel Announces Plans to Reduce Work Force

BY DENNIS DOMRZALSKI Intel Corp. said Tuesday that it will eliminate 12,000 jobs worldwide by mid-2017, an 11 percent reduction in its work force. Those reductions are part of Intel's attempts to transform itself “from a PC company to one that powers the cloud and billions of smart, connected computing devices,” the company said. The cuts will come “through site consolidations worldwide, a combination of voluntary and involuntary departures, and a re-evaluation of programs,” Intel said. What those cuts will mean to Intel's Rio Rancho plant wasn't clear. The plant employed 2,300 people at the beginning of 2015, down from 5,500 in the mid-2000s. Intel hasn't made an investment in the Rio Rancho plant since 2009, and there has been speculation that it could soon close the facility that opened in 1980. Intel said it will inform affected employees over the next 60 days about whether they'll have jobs. The workforce reductions will save the company $750 million this year and $1.4 billion a year by mid-2017, Intel said. On Wednesday, Intel will tell Sandoval County officials how many people were employed at the Rio Rancho facility at the beginning of this year.
