BREAKING: 3 Killed In Head-On DWI Crash In Torrance County

BY DENNIS DOMRZALSKI

Three people were killed — including a 18-month-old girl and a 17-year-old female — and four were critically injured in a head-on collision Saturday night in Torrance County that police suspect was the result of drunken driving.

The collision occurred on Lexco Road near Martinez Road about a mile south of Old Route 66, Torrance County Sheriff Heath White told ABQ Press. The suspect was driving south on Lexco in a Toyota SUV when he allegedly swerved into the northbound lane and slammed head-on into another SUV that was carrying a family of seven, White said.

The father of the family was killed, as were an 18-month-old girl and a 17-year old female. The other family members were taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital in critical, but stable condition, White said.

The suspect was not seriously injured and has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and one count each of reckless driving, failure to maintain a traffic lane and causing great bodily harm, White said.

“We got a a 911 call of an accident and we located three victims that were deceased and we located a suspect who was highly intoxicated and still on the scene,” White said.

The names of the victims have not been released, White said.

The suspect had been arrested three other times for DWI, White said, who added, “It was not a good night.”
