Brachle Shot Grant With Unauthorized Weapon

BY DAN KLEIN One of the unanswered questions in the Greg Brachle/Jacob Grant shooting case is why was Brachle using a weapon not authorized by the Albuquerque Police Department? On May 5, 2014, APD Chief Gorden Eden issued an order requiring all APD officers to carry only a department issued Glock, or Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun. Yet eight months later, on January 9, 2015, APD Lieutenant Greg Brachle shot his own detective, Jacob Grant, with a gun that does not appear to be department issued. Grant was shot eight times with a .45-caliber handgun and hollow-point rounds. That would be in direct conflict with the order that Eden issued eight months earlier. It's now almost two years since Eden issued the order and we don't know if any APD cops are still allowed to carry their personal weapons, or if they are all in compliance with Eden's order. We asked APD spokeswoman Celina Espinoza if all APD officers were in full compliance with Eden's order and why Bachle was using his personal weapon eight months after being told not to. She didn't immediately respond, but we'll keep asking.
