Lapel Camera Footage: Brachle Shoots Grant

City Releases Lapel Video of Blue-on-Blue Shooting

BY DENNIS DOMRZALSKI The City of Albuquerque on Thursday released the lapel video of APD Lt. Greg Brachle shooting Det. Jacob Grant during an undercover drug bust on January 9, 2015. Please be advised that this footage may be too graphic for some: Brachle left his police department SUV shortly after hearing another officer shout over the radio, "Bust signal, bust signal, bust signal." Moments later, Brachle approaches the undercover car from the rear driver's side and shouts, "Hands up! Hands up! Put your hands where I can see them! Put your hands where I can see them!" Nearly immediately, Brachle shouts, "Gun! Gun!" He fires two rounds into the vehicle's rear seat, where Grant is sitting. After a momentary pause, Brachle fires six more shots into Grant. After realizing that it was Grant he had shot, Brachle starts exclaiming, "Oh shit, that was Jacob. Fuck me. Fuck." He then asks Grant, who is slumped in the back seat of the car, bleeding, "Are you okay?" Amazingly, Grant responded: "No." Then, Brachle says, "Come on out, dude. Come on, I'm sorry, man. I didn't know it was you." Brachle then starts wailing incoherently and eventually tells Grant, "Hang in there, buddy. I fuckin' love you, man." On Wednesday, the City agreed to pay Grant $6.5 million to settle a lawsuit he filed against the City and Brachle over the shooting. Grant suffered damage to nearly every internal organ as a result of the shooting and has undergone more than a dozen surgeries to repair the damage. Grant insisted that the video be released to the public. Dennis Domrzalski is news editor of ABQ Free Press.
